my Orijin| Fela Kuti

Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti was born in Ogun State, Nigeria on October 15th, 1938 . Many people around the world know this pioneer of Afro beat music as plain and simple, Fela Kuti.

To many outside Africa, Fela  is seen as an entertainer, singer-composer, trumpet, sax and keyboard player, bandleader, paving  the way for current musician in Africa and abroad. In the Hiphop industry, he is big, a legend. Producers up till today sample his unique Afrobeat, and rap artist like K’naan, Mos-def,  Talib , JayZ, Nas and many rappers around the globe have put an icing to to their albums with a Fela.

In Africa, Fela is a politician, a legend, a controversial musicians who fought for human right. A legend like Bob Marley, using music as a weapon to fight against corruption in Nigeria and in Africa.  A weapon to speak his mind against colonialism and constant milking of African wealth from the Europeans. A weapon that landed him in jail for five years but could not stop him.  An Activist.

Fela quotes  ” 99.9 percent of the information you get about Africa is wrong”

Fela Died on August 2nd 1997. Publicly it is said that Fela died of Aids…I don’t know how true or false that is, but I do know that many legends have had unproven stories which at the end turned out to be false. A good example Michael Jackson and his child molestation, only to hear a few weeks after his death, a confession from one of the victims that Michael Jackson did not molest him… Now my question is did he really die of Aids or is it another camouflage story?
