He ripped-off her garment and raped her of her gold. He taught her what she did not want to know and whipped her to forget who she was. Her only child was abducted and forced to speak Portuguese, Dutch and English, confusing him of his mother-tongue, culture and people. His mother sang a song when he was a child which never left him. As he grew older enough to understand the words in the song his mother sang, he realized who he was, rejected what he had become, and fought for his freedom and the freedom of his people. His mother did not live to see this revolution.

Today is Ghana’s independence. Today marks a historical date in Africa’s freedom fight, as Ghana became the first country in Africa to gain independence from a colonial world. 56 years is not long ago, as some that fought still live and remember those days likeYesterday”.

They feel the pain in their scarsthey see their wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters taken as slaves out of their land to a place they never knewthey still hear thedoor of no returnslammed, they hear the sea cry as it tried to hold back the ships from sailing away with its people to the Diaspora. Till today, they still sing the song, hoping that the winds will at least whistle that song to their loved ones, where ever they are. “Theyare us.

Sometimes I wonder, do I curse the long wait of modern technology or do I bless it. Ik zweer, if the technology that we have today existed then, I don’t think we would be this disconnected from our roots and still suffer this mental slavery.

I hear the voice of Freedom!!!! I hear the voice of Unity. I see the sun erase the nameGold-Coastfrom the tabernacle and replaced with a powerful name, sealed with gold, GHANA.

Vandaag, March 6th, is not only a day for GHANA to remember but an independence day for all Blacks living in the Diaspora. It is time to rethink, reunite, restructure and rebuild what was destroyed years ago; our culture, our economy, our politics our lifestyles. It is time for the Blackstars all over Africa and the Diaspora to UNITE for a better tomorrow. We owe it to our ancestors, our leaders, the Osei Tutu’s ,Yaa Asantewaa the warrior queen, Kwame Nkrumah and all who fought for our Freedom.

[ YOUR OPINION ]

Ghana is blessed with political stability, development and wealth in its Gold and current Oil findings. As much as I am happy, I am also concerned about the foreign interest. Especially with the past stories of illegal mining by the Chinese in Ghana. This leaves me to fear about our oil as this has been factors of conflicts in others countries.

I ASK:

  • How do we moveforward ever and backwards neverwhile controlling our resources?

  • What should all African countries rich in wealth like Ghana, do to prevent Neo-colonialism?
